Something Clever

Tuesday 4/5/11

Liina is back from surgery for a short week of classes. We got a good round of advice from Nick Zdon last Thursday, the results of which were seen in class the following Tuesday. Nick gave us some great advice about creating mood boards that were more true to the final website and refining our site maps so that they reflect the actual pages in our sites.

I was going to post a picture of an ovarian cyst, but as is turns out they’re pretty gross looking.

Ted Tuesday: Jonathan Harris

Jonathan Harris wants to make sense of the emotional world of the Web. With deep compassion for the human condition, his projects troll the Internet to find out what we’re all feeling and looking for. (Ted.com)

Jonathan has been a part of the creation of several interactive websites including wefeelfine.com, Universe.com and Timecapsule.com. Most of Jonathan’s work involves information mapping. He takes a lot of his information from internet sources like personal blogs and twitter accounts.

We moved on from Ted Tuesday into critiques of our progress and then some work time. This is my progress so far on my mood board, personas and wireframes.

Wire Frames 2,3 Version 1

Wire Frames 4,5 Version 1

So far, I need to make a few tweeks to the mood board and do some major over hauling on the wire frames. During the work time Claire and I met and she gave me some great content to put in the site which also helped me figure out how to organize the information. Here are my notes for the brain sesh:

Notes for refinement

My notes are almost illegible, however I can pull some useful information from them.

In case I forgot to mention, I am partnered up with Claire. I am the designer to her website: Jumpring and she is the designer to my site: Cork Board. The other match ups are as follows:

Christina is designing a wine site for Jackie who is designing Christina’s endangered animal site.

Maggie has Adams scuba site and Adam is designing Maggie’s dressage site.

Jessie wanted a graffiti website which Claudia is designing and Claudia wanted a Feng Shui site.

Maria loves puppets and Kyle is realizing her dream in the form of a puppet making site. Kyle loves to stick things in holes and Maria is creating his body plug website.

For next class we need to have preliminary designs for two pages of our sites. There will be a quiz on Thursday on chapter 13 in the UX book.

At the moment I am almost finished with a bag of Whopper Eggs and my mouth is raw and I might puke. Happy Easter!

Poodles, Robots, Layers and Due Date Anxiety-

Henry Is a Poodle.

Henry George is staying with me for a whole week and he made a guest appearance to class on Tuesday. Henry was a little freaked out initially probably because he was insecure about never having been to school himself. I’m sure all talk of artificial intelligence was quite too much for a small poodle.

TED Tuesday: Robots

About the Talk

Cynthia Breazeal dreams of a world where robots are not sci-fi enigmas but as  living room essentials. Cynthia and her team explore the ins and outs of mechanized emoting, teaching and play. Ultimately she would like to see a fully interactive robot that responds to human behaviors.

Layer Group Demo

Liina has been demonstrating handy tricks in photoshop and Tuesday was no exception. She Showed the class how keep organized when working with a photoshop document that has many layers. Here is a video I found on Adobe TV about all the functions of layers in photoshop.

Basically, all you have to do is click the folder button at the bottom of the layer palate. A folder will pop up and will be labeled group #. You can change the name by double clicking to the right of the folder. Drag the layers that you want to keep together into the folder. the flipper allows you to contract and expand the grouped layers. Using layer groups allows for better organization and continued workability of your layers.

Work Time

We finished class with work time. I found myself increasingly frustrated with how my designs were turning out. here is what I have so far.

Annie’D

I am 23 years of age. I spent the first 18 years of life in Wauwatosa, WI.

I have been in St. Paul for the last 4 years and would rather eat mouse droppings than move back to Wisconsin.

I have been to three other colleges, lived in three different states and 13 different residences (in the past 5 years). I am constantly seeking a maximum level of joy through occupation, education and living space.

After working full time in the Target Deli for a year during a hiatus from college, I decided that every venue of education had been disappointing because what I really wanted to do was go to art school. I have always been creative and I have always loved to put things together. In high school, I put together a whole portfolio in an independent study art class. I opted out of art school because I though I was too smart (really I was too scared). When I applied to CVA, everything fell into place and just felt right. Honestly I just liked how much it didn’t feel like college. I really like it here. I still don’t know what I want to do with my life, something with design. Most of the time I feel like I am missing a vital piece of the design puzzle but I have the zeal to continue trudging along. I have come to accept that I don’t know way more than I do know and that is ok.

I am a certifiable facebook creeper. I obsess over design blogs. I am easily the most addicted netflix user there is.

However, I love yoga, eating with friends and am an accomplished mover and shaker.
